Beta-alanine crystals, polarised light micrograph. Beta-alanine is used by the body to drain lactic acid from the muscles during exercise. When beta-alanine is ingested into the body it is transformed into carnosine when it reacts with l-histidine. Carnosine is stored in the muscles and released in response to a drop in pH. Increased stores of carnosine offer protection to increased levels of lactic acid induced by exercise. As a result, the health supplement beta-alanine gives the body a greater power output. Magnification: x70 when printed 10cm wide.
