Light micrograph tissue section showing squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, which is considered as being the main type of cervical cancer. This type of cancer begins in the thin flat cells (squamous cells) lining the outer part of the cervix, which projects into the vagina. About 80 per cent of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.
