Sphalerite is a zinc-sulphide with varying content of iron, chemical formula (ZnFe)S. It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and more rarely in sediments. The crystal system is cubic, crystal habit euhedral or tetrahedral, sometimes with lamellar stacking as illustrated in this sample. Sphalerite is the most common ore of zinc. Actual width of sample is 260 mm.
