Hermes Propylaios herm, an archaic sculptural type of marble sacred boundary stone formed like pillars with elaborated head and prominent phallus. The eyes and phallus were separately inset. In the beginning hermai only showed Hermes, the god of travelers and thieves, but over time other gods and goddesses as well as famous people were depicted this way too. Alcamenes was an ancient Greek sculptor of Lemnos and Athens, who flourished in the 2nd half of the 5th century BC. He was a younger contemporary of Phidias and noted for the delicacy and finish of his works. On display at Athens National Archaeological Museum.
