Public toilet campaign in India. In many areas of India a lack of public toilets leads to open defecation which contributes to the spread of diseases. As part of Operation Clean India (poster of Gandhi on wall), the government announced plans to construct 110 million toilets, aimed at fulfilling one of Gandhi's dreams to end open defecation. Many developing countries lack the toilet facilities found in developed countries. Public health initiatives and longer-term research is aimed at developing sustainable toilets that minimise the environmental impact of toilets due to water usage. Photographed in 2019.
