Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, which opened in 1849, was designed to connect two parts of the Delaware & Hudson Canal (D&H) carrying coal from Lackawaxen in Pennsylvania to New York and New England. It was later converted to carry automotive traffic and pedestrians over the Delaware River.
