Swiss geologist Albert Heim (1849-1937) with mountain guides in the Maderanertal, an Alpine valley in central Switzerland. Heim is best known for his three-volume work 'Geologie der Schweiz' (1919-1922). He worked as professor of geology in the polytechnic school at Zurich, and in 1875 became professor of geology at the university. He was director of the Geological Survey of Switzerland from 1882. He was awarded the 1904 Wollaston Medal by the Geological Society of London.
