An engraving depicting the miniature fort built in the grounds of the Palais Cardinal in 1650 for the amusement and instruction of Louis XIV (1638-1715). The bastion type of fortification was a response to efficient artillery and allowed defenders protection while allowing them to fire at any position the attackers took up. In the foreground is part of a formal parterre. Engraving by Israel Silvestre, the Younger (1621-1691) a French draftsman, etcher and print dealer. Dated 17th century.
