Engraving depicting Bell & Tainter's Graphophone. A recording was made by speaking into a mouthpiece while turning the wax cylinder by a treadle, as in a sewing machine. With an earpiece attachment on the stylus the cylinders could be played back for audio typing. Dated 19th century
