Incense Burner, late 1800s. This incense burner emulates Chinese porcelain in its glaze and form. The wild profusion of flowers on the bronze lid is a deliberate counterpoint to the elegant simplicity of the burner?s body. A number of prominent Meiji-period ceramicists explored classical Chinese forms and glazes even as they also produced stoneware with Japanese-style glazes.
