Dipylon Amphora, 8th Century BC. The largest find of Geometric Period vases was at the Dipylon Cemetery in Athens. Apparently these vessels have a funerary use, perhaps as ossuaries. Their style is called Geometric because all designs?even animals and people?are deliberately reduced to flat geometric forms and linear motifs depicting only the essentials.
