Building of the Medicean port (Italian Porto Mediceo) was stated; in 1572; by order of Grand Duke Cosimo I. it should connect the Old fortress (Fortezza Vecchia) of 1534 with the 53 m high lighthouse Fanale dei Pisani (Lights of the Pisa people); built according to plans of famous Giovanni Pisano and realized by master builders Rocco Entello de Spina and Bonaggiunta Ciabatti. The light house was blown up; in 1944; by German troops and rebuilt; according to the original project; in 1954. The Medicean port was built by Bartolomeo Ammannati; who was followed by Claudio Cogorano; Antonio Cantagallina; and Robert Dudley. In 19th and 20th century; it got further breakwaters and addititonal smaller lighthouses. In 2013; the new 5;80 m high statue of the Madonna dei Popoli (Madonna of the people); with decorated basement 8 m high; was unvbeiled; at the entrance of the harbour near the old lighthouse.
