Ireland; Co. Donegal; Donegal Town: bronze statue of Hugh Roe O'Donnell (Irish: Aodh Ruadh mac N閕ll Gairbh ?Domhnaill); born 1427; died 1505; King of Tyrconnell 1461 - 1505) and ruling in Donegal Town up to his Death (1505). Hugh Roe O'Donnel; also called Red Hugh O'Donnell and Red Hugh I; was the wealthy chief of the O'Donnell clan and built (or rebuilt) Donegal Castle in 1474. At the same time; he and his wife Nuala built a Franciscan monastery further down the river. The statue is situated at the harbour; looking directly on the ancient cemetery and the ruins of the Abbey.
