Toxic cosmetics product, 1930s. Named 'Othine', this cosmetics product from the 1930s was marketed as able to to remove brown spots and lighten skin. These results were produced by the product's active ingredient mercury, despite the toxic properties of this metal being well-known. Those using this product risked bone deterioration, tooth loss, and neurological, pulmonary and renal damage, as well as cognitive and sensory impairment, and even death. This photograph is from the archives of the US Food and Drug Administration, which regulated and banned toxic medical and cosmetic products.
