Star destroyed by black hole, radio images. Radio telescope images of a tidal disruption event that took place in June 2015 in the colliding galaxies Arp 299. The powerful gravity of a supermassive black hole has torn apart a passing star, pulling material into a disk rotating around the black hole, launching a jet of particles outwards. This is shown by the elongated form of the radio images seen here (the normal images show circular radio sources). Arp 299 is 134 million light years distant, in the constellation of Ursa Major. These images were obtained using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), with C-band emissions at left and X-band emissions at right. The results of these observations were published in 2018.
