The Egyptian room at Villa San Martino; Elba Island; Tuscany; Italy. (Ile d'Elbe)Today the Villa San Martino; once one of the two official residences of Napoleon during his 10-month exile from May 4; 1814 to February 26; 1815; is a National Museum.Used as a dining hall; the Egyptian room is the central element of the building and owes its name to the trompe-l'oeil paintings that decorate walls; ceilings and doors. It is conceived as a sort of portico supported by bundled papyrus columns that open on a desert landscape ornate with characters; battle scenes and palms.Decorations are by Vincenzo Antonio Revelli (1764-1835). Revelli draws inspiration from the the engravings by Dominique Denon based on the artist's experience following Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.2018
