Estonia; city of Tartu (German: former Dorpat; also D鰎pt): statue of natural scientist Karl Ernst von Baer (1792 - 1876); erected 1886. Baer was a famous scientist and started embryology. He worked in K鰊igsberg and St. Petersburg; as well. von Baer discovered the ovum (egg cell; Eizelle) of mammals (S鋟getiere). The head of the statue is annually washed by Tartu students with champagne.
