Estonia; island of Saaremaa (German/Swedish 謘el); village of Karja (German: Karrishof): Lutheran St Catherine`s Church (German: evangelisch-lutherische St. Katharinenkirche) of 1254. This originally catholic church is the second oldest one on island of Saaremaa. The gothic style building was a fortified church (German: Wehrkirche); as it was built in the starting period of the colonization and christianization of the island by the Teutonic Order (Deutscher Orden). The church has lots of ancient artefacts; including frescoes in the roof of the apsis; directly above the altar. These include magic signs; so called Triskellions (German: Triskelen); sprials or figures with three legs; pentagrams; stars; and so on. It is a combination of Christian and pagan symbols and should keep away evil spirits.
