ROBBEN ISLAND: rocky island 9 km north of Cape Town. Former whaling station; infirmary for leprosy patients and naval station; place of exile for prisoners - the Alkatraz of South Africa. The most famous detainee was Nelson Mandela; who was released in 1990 after a 27-year prison sentence. The prison has since become a museum; where the former guards guide the visitors.
