It was commissioned to commemorate the family's emigration to New Zealand. In the background the vessel 'Slains Castle' is waiting. James 'MacKay' Snr stands in the back; his wife; Anne; seated near him; also their six children (James Jr.; Robert; Anne; Janet; Isabella and Erica) and two nephews (Alexander Tertius Mackay and James Tertius Mackay). In reality; presumably the family of the merchant James Mackie lived in London and sailed from Plymouth; the ship was a New Zealand Company ship. The family settled at Nelson Haven and built 'Drumduan'; J.
