Hairy cell leukaemia, light micrograph. Hairy Cell Leukaemia (HCL) is a mature B-cell neoplasm that mainly involves the blood, bone marrow, and splenic red pulp. It makes up only about 2% of all leukaemias and predominantly affects middle-aged men. The neoplastic lymphocytes circulating in the peripheral blood have an ill-defined, ruffled cytoplasmic border with hair-like surface projections, as shown in this image. Peripheral blood smear stain with Giemsa stain.
