Edith of Wessex, Queen of England, 11th century. Historical illustration of Edith of Wessex (1025-1075), Queen of England as the wife of the Anglo-Saxon ruler Edward the Confessor. Their marriage was childless. Edith was the daughter of the powerful Godwin, Earl of Wessex. Her brother, Harold Godwinson, became king after Edward and was defeated by William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of England. Artwork published in 1857.
