Protocetus prehistoric whale ancestor, illustration. This marine mammal lived from 45 to 43 million years ago, during the Eocene. It was found in seas and oceans worldwide, reaching lengths of around 2.5 metres. It forms part of the evolutionary tree that resulted in modern cetaceans (whales).
