Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832), French botanist and geologist. Jacquemont studied medicine and then travelled in Europe pursuing his interest in botany. He was sent by the French national botanic garden (the Jardin des plantes) to collect plants in India, arriving in Calcutta in May 1829. He visited a number of places in the Indian subcontinent, including Lahore, Amber, Ladakh and Bardhaman (Burdwan). Plants named for him include the Himalayan White Birch, the Indian Tree Hazel, and the Afghan Cherry. He died in Bombay of cholera. Artwork published in 1886.
