Cumulonimbus cloud, with towering anvil head, over San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Cumulonimbus clouds form when atmospheric instabilities allow strong updrafts of warm, moist air to keep rising and condensing, up to altitudes of around ten kilometres. The end result is typically a storm with thunder and lightning. Photographed in the early afternoon in November.
