Mixotoxodon larensis was a rhino-like mammal, which represents the northernmost Pleistocene toxodontid. Its remains are known from many localities in Central and South America. Mixotoxodon is known from a single species Mixotoxodon larensis. Biogeographically, Mixotoxodon larensis is an intertropical taxon. It is the only notoungulate known to have migrated out of South America during the Great American Interchange. Its fossils have been found in northern South America, in Veracruz and Michoacan, Mexico (with a possible find in Tamaulipas), and eastern Texas, USA. Mixotoxodon was 3.3 m in length, 180 ?m in height and weighed 1500-3800 kg. The genus was also one of the last surviving notoungulates, along with related genera such as the better-known Toxodon. The name refers to the fact that Mixotoxodon combines characteristics typical of different toxodontid subfamilies.
