Elswick Shot Tower, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, c1955-c1969. A general view of the Elswick Shot Tower, with a yard with pallets in the foreground. Shot towers were used to create spherical lead shot. This was done by dropping molten lead through a sieve, down a large shaft or tower. Part of Elswick Lead Works, this shot tower was completed in 1797 and remained in operation until 1951. It was demolished in 1968-1969.
