Larval stage of an eel. This is a Leptocephalus eel. The eggs and larvae of fish are known as ichthyoplankton. As a fish develops from an egg to its adult form, it passes through one or more larval stages, which include the development of fins and scales, going from a free-floating organism to being able to swim under its own power.
