'Alexander Adam, L.L.D.', (mid 19th century). Portrait of Alexander Adam (1741-1809), Scottish teacher and writer on Roman antiquities. Aged seventeen, he walked 150 miles from his parents' tenant farm in Morayshire to attend logic classes at Edinburgh university. He was appointed Rector of the Royal High School in Edinburgh, and taught Sir Walter Scott.
