Passing up the Mediterranean, we arrive at Barcelona, one. of the most important cities of Spain, as well as one of the most beautiful, and the capital of Catalonia. The superb situation of this romantic city, especially with regard to its port and harbour, .has caused it to develop an enormous maritime trade, and from it not only its own goods, but those of half the eastern side of Spain,are shipped to all parts of the world. The city itself is partly old-fashioned and partly modern; the quaint houses of the Middle Ages being found in strange juxtaposition with those of recent erection, and it possesses some grand squares in which are sold the fruits and flowers in which the neighbourhood abounds.
