Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. No. 3.??”THE TOWN OF GIBRALTAR. The town itself rises on the slopes of the rock, and presents to the eye a curious mixture of Spanish houses, English villas, and, in some cases, Moorish buildings. The streets arc quaint and tortuous, and are scarcely ever penetrated by the English in the garrison, who keep to their own particular neighbourhood. From the slope on which it rises the African coast may be easily distinguished and also the Spanish town of Algesiras, which forms the other extremity of the Bay of Gibraltar. The whole population of the town is about twenty-five thousand persons, of whom about seven thousand are English; and the Government is adniinistered in a similar manner to that of all other English possessions. The port is one of the few remaining free ones in Europe , a circumstance which affords smugglers a splendid opportunity of getting their contra????band goods into Spain.
