Ouseburn Viaduct with accommodation arch, Stepney Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1955-c1980. A general view of the viaduct over the Ouseburn, seen from one side of the valley and looking across, following the direction of the bridge on the left. The railway viaduct was built 1837-1839 by John and Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and North Shields Railway Company, with sandstone ashlar piers and iron arches. The piers have buttresses, and the arches and railway bed girders have iron T-shaped latticework. the iron was installed in 1869 to replace the laminated wood structures. This was the first bridge to use to Wiebeking system of laminated wood in Britain.
