Maria Bochkareva (lying down, centre, 1889-1920), female Russian soldier who formed the Women's Battalion of Death and fought in the First World War. She is seen here with some of the first women to volunteer, together with the first drill sergeants and a nurse who volunteered to go to the front with the battalion.
