Princess Mary Stuart (1631-60), eldest daughter of King Charles I. Mary is five or six years old in this portrait but is dressed as an adult in expensive silver lace, with pearls around her neck and in her hair. The only concession to childhood is her apron. This portrait was probably painted to market the young princess as a potential bride. She was married at the age of 12 to the future Prince William II of Orange
