The Grand Duchess George of Russia (1876 - 1940), formerly Princess Maria of Greece, daughter of King George I of Greece and sister of King Constantine of Greece. Pictured at the hospital she set up in Harrogate, North Yorkshire for wounded soldiers during World War I. She had the fortune to be stranded in England when war broke out - her husband was arrested by Bolsheviks and shot in January 1919. She started the hospital of twelve beds for wounded soldiers and later, converted another house with fifty beds and spent much of her time supervising the work. She is pictured in the centre of the front row and among the nurses seen (on the left hand of the Grand Duchess) is Princess Margaret of Denmark. The uniform worn by the nurses was mauve and they wore a badge with the monogram of the Grand Duchess in mauve on a white background.
