Captain Riversdale Nonus Grenfell (1880-1914), (1880-1915), one of fifteen children, and twin brother of Francis Octavius Grenfell, also in the 9th Lancers who was earned the Victoria Cross for his actions at Audriegnes, Belgium on 24 August 1914. Rivy, as he was known, on 14 September while directing fire on German positions was shot and killed. He was buried nearby in the cemetery at Vendresse. He is pictured here mounted on his polo pony. All nine of the Grenfell brothers were talented polo players but Francis and Riversdale were considered the best. The twin brothers were on the Ranelagh team that won the American Open and on the team Freebooters, alongside Leopold Christian Duncan Jenner and the Duke of Roxburghe, that won the Hurlingham Champion Cup.
