Postcard from the First World War depicting a woman knitting 'comforts' for soldiers (note the khaki coloured wool), and gazing wistfully into the distance, no doubt hoping that her own soldier will make it back to Blighty unharmed. Knitting 'comforts' for troops was one way in which women could take part in the war effort, and patterns for various items including hats, mittens, mufflers and waistcoats appeared in women's magazines of the period.
