In the meydan (sacred space") of the Bektashi Sufi order are 12 "posts" ( Turkish meaning usually a skin, normally a sheepskin, but in some cases leopard or gazelle skins. They represent the controlled animal self of the dervishes or Baba's (Sheikhs) - only initiated muhip (lovers), dervishes, or Babas / Anas ("fathers" or "mothers") could enter the meydan. Each post has a certain position, is related to a particular saint of the order, and also has a duty associated with it. "
