The hose laying lorry at Lambeth (Fire Brigade HQ) being pasted with Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) recruitment posters as part of a countrywide recruitment campaign before the outbreak of the Second World War. The London campaign started in March 1938 and some 23,000 auxiliary personnel were absorbed into the London Fire Brigade by the outbreak of bombing (The Blitz) in September 1940.
