H. L .Oakley (1882-1960), renowned silhouette artist, seen here at work cutting the silhouette of two young female customers who pose for him on a stand. Examples of his work are on display all around. Oakley divided his time between commercial work and setting up booths in department stores and seaside resorts where he would cut hundreds of portraits each year. This particular picture shows him at work in his booth in Fenwicks department store, Newcastle-upon-Tyne during the winter season of 1920 - 21.
