Simon Hughes (third from left) won the seat for the Liberals, with Labour coming second. Screaming Lord Sutch (left, 1940-1999), musician, was standing for the first time as leader of the newly formed Official Monster Raving Loony Party (he came sixth out of 16 candidates).
