Paul Robeson (1898-1976), American bass-baritone singer and actor, also involved in left-wing politics and activism. He campaigned against racism and colonialism, and supported trade unionism, civil rights and socialism. He became a target for anti-Communist campaigners, although it is unclear whether he was ever a member of the Communist Party. Seen here in the role of Shakespeare's Othello, which he played twice, the first time in London in 1930 and the second time on Broadway, New York, in the 1940s. This photograph is probably from the Broadway production.
