THE CRUEL SISTER (The Twa Sisters - The Miller and the King's Daughter) British ballad first known to have appeared on a broadside in 1656. It recounts the tale of a fair haired girl drowned by her jealous elder, dark haired sister in a river. Her body floats ashore and a passing minstrel makes a harp (sometimes a fiddle) from a frame of bone and the girls long yellow hair. The minstrel takes the instrument to the sisters home but when it is played it sings about the murder and the elder sister is revealed as the murderess.
