The 29th President of Chile, Salvador Allende (Salvador Isabelino del Sagrado Coraz?n de Jes? Allende Gossens, 1908-1973). Seen here accompanied by armed guards in the Presidential (Moneda) Palace, Chile. Allende was deposed by General Augusto Pinochet in a military coup on 11 September 1973, and committed suicide the same day. Above the photograph is a reference to a German documentary film, Im Feuer Bestanden, made by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann in 1978, depicting the final hours in the Moneda Palace.
