Fancy dress for 1884 suggesting the party goer dress up as Lady Jane Grey, ill-fated and short-lived Queen of England for just nine days. Generally represented in grey and white satin, or black velvet and white satin. The surcoat opens over a jewelled stomacher and kirtle, and is bordered down the sides and bodice with ermine. The bodice is pointed at the waist and is square at the neck; chemisette of satin, quilted with pearls inside; close honeycomb ruff at throat, a velvet coif and veil. Long hanging velvet sleeves, right under-ones of satin, with ruffles; cloth of gold, richest jewels, velvet and brocade 'admissable for her more prosperous days'. Jewelled girdle, often pearls. The skirt or surcoat is full, and touches the ground. The kirtle is embroidered or quilted with pearls.
