Lino Lacedelli (1925 - 2009) on the left, alongside Achille Compagnoni (1914 - 2009), the two climbers who made the first successful ascent to the summit of K2 on 31 July 1954, part of an Italian expedition led by Count Ardito Desio. K2 is the second highest mountain in the world, and the summit was not reached for a second time until 1977.
