Verdun - crowds visit the provisional mass repository of remains of soldiers killed during the savage military actions at Verdun during the First World War. The Douaumont ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. The provisional Ossuary was open from 1920 to 1927 - the official opening of the new Ossuary and memorial tower was in 1932.
