Richardson's Original Musical Stones - on display in Keswick Museum and Art Gallery in Cumbria. Joseph Richardson (b. 1790), a stonemason and gifted amateur musician from Keswick, experimented with lithophones after noting the nearly-musical tones of some of the rock he worked with. He began to test the various rocks of the Lake District for their note and collected ones that gave a pure, resonant ring, forming them into a sequence.
