Princess Alice (1843-1878), second daughter and third child of Queen Victoria, pictured in Scotland with her eldest child, Princess Victoria of Hesse. Alice, who lived in the German Duchy of Hesse with her husband Grand Duke Louis, went home to give birth to her first child. Victoria, the grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on 5th April 1863 with Queen Victoria on hand to give comfort and reassurance.
