Prince Waldemar of Prussia (1889-1945) with his father, Prince Heinrich (Henry) of Prussia (1862-1929) at Balmoral in the 1890s. Waldemar was the eldest son of Henry and Princess Irene of Hesse. He was a haemophilia sufferer like his younger brother Heinrich, who had died at the age of four. Though his health was precarious and he often came close to death, he managed to reach the age of fifty-six. He was taken ill in the closing months of the Second World War while trying to escape the advancing Soviet Army, and died because the clinic where he was taken could not perform blood transfusions. Father and son are shown here wearing the Highland dress traditionally worn while at the royal residence of Balmoral.
